The Lost Gem In the Porsche Range?

  • This is the 2017 Targa 4GTS

Yes, I am indeed talking about the Porsche 911 Targa. It came around in the sixties when Porsche won a race called the Targa Florio and named their first drop top car, the Targa. It was discontinued, but then the name was revived and brought back from the dead in 2015. From then it wasn’t given that much attention.

This is where I come in…I’m here to prove how the Targa is actually better than Porsche’s best selling Sports car: the 911 Carrera.

The Carrera uses a Flat Six 3.6 litre as its engine. So does the Targa. However the Targa’s engine is twin turbo’d, unlike the Carrera. It has more power (450BHP) over the Carrera’s 430BHP. OK so not exactly the biggest difference, but here are the 0-60 times: Targa: 3.2 seconds vs the Carrera’s 3.9 seconds. The Targa sounds better with the small but audible hissing of the turbos and the angry gunshots of crackle pops it unleashes whenever you downshift. This is for both: if you spec the Sport Exhaust you will seriously scare the bystanders. It is so loud it is genuinely surprising for innocent pedestrians. The Targa has slightly wider rear wheel arches and personally I love the chrome bar across the back. You can either have the chrome bar grey (pictured above) or silver. The Targa also gets rid of the rear pillar and replaces it with a beautiful sleek plane of glass which not looks elegant but (probably accidentally) improves the rear visibility. Check the photos above if you don’t really get what I mean. My final point is the awesome red LED strip which serves as the rear light: this only actually comes on the Targa. It does come with the Carrera but it doesn’t actually come on. It merely reflects light.

Oh, and the Targa is a drop top too…

Now don’t get me wrong the Carrera 4GTS is a very good car. In my opinion at least, the Targa just looks better.
